I don't like Mass Effect. [03 Aug 2008|03:30pm]
The basic battle system is pretty cool. The conversation system and character customization is decent. The story seems to be as good as any sci-fi movie or TV show. The good ends right about there. The level design is shit. The AI is shit. The menu interface is shit. The RPG elements are a hassle to manage and so are your squadmates.

The game would have been better if it were a co-op game and/or your character worked alone. As for character growth, it should be based on what your character does in the game. If you use pistols a lot, then your pistol stats grow, etc. like Oblivion.  Instead there's a silly "add points to whatever you want even if you've never used them in the game" system.  Other than that, some better level design, a tad more character customization, and better menu interface for upgrading equipment and armor would have made this game worthy of all the scores it's gotten.

Basically, they fucked up the RPG side of things and the AI sucks like just about every other squad based shooter out there.

Maybe they could have fixed the AI thing by implementing a system similar to Final Fantasy XII's gambit system in which you set each individual character's priorities in battle. Actually, that would be perfect. Why didn't I design this game?

Oh well, next up is Lost Odyssey. Maybe I'll like it a bit more.

Edit: Yes, I like Lost Odyssey a lot more. They somehow managed to combine Final Fantasy VII-X in one game. Most reviews state that the biggest problem is that it's unoriginal and doesn't take any chances. None of that matters when games are this addicting, though. There's something to be said about games that aren't fresh but are still fantastic. This game plays exactly like a classic PS1 RPG. The formula has definitely stood the test of time. Best JRPG for the current-generation so far. I know that's not saying much, but it's still true...

My ideas for the next Metal Gear game [03 Aug 2008|01:33am]
Metal Gear Solid 5: Ok, this one's kind of obvious. But a completely new game with a new main character with some of the old characters as your support team would be great.

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 remake: These games need to be remade. New graphics, new gameplay, and more story integrated into the game to make them more consistent with the Metal Gear Solid games

Metal Gear Solid 2 remake: Ok, it may not be necessary to remake the entire game. But I think we should be able to see Snake's side of things in the Big Shell chapter. We know he does things there that would make a great game. Hell, I could probably lay out the entire game. I'll do that later.

Raiden side-story: I would actually like to see a game that takes place between MGS2 and MGS4 that stars Raiden  on his quest to rescue Sunny from the Patriots and become a badass ninja in the process.

Another game starring Big Boss: There's still a big chunk of time between MGS: Portable Ops and the first Metal Gear game. I'm sure something during that time could be made into a game.

A game starring The Boss: Could be cool to see how she became such a badass. Maybe leading up to when she gave birth to Ocelot and having to fight The Sorrow as a final boss?

Those are the only good ideas I have right now. I'd love to see all of these. Konami better make at least some of them happen.

Ok, so I looked over everything several times, and I'm definitely right. I can be get a nice, shiny degree next summer. But there is one thing I didn't know or even thought about until today. If I go just one extra semester with four classes, I could actually double major in Philosophy and English. I haven't made up my mind quite yet, but I'm leaning towards going for it. I realize that potential employers will jizz all over the idea of hiring someone with a double major in Philosophy and English that possibly graduated cum laude (maybe even magna cum laude if I kick lots of academic ass in the upcoming semesters).

I'm just not sure if it's going to be a lot of jizz, or just a little spurt. If it's just going to be a little spurt, then I'm not sure if it's worth it. If I don't double major, it'll be a lot easier for me for the next year and a half because I'll be done with the philosophy degree requirements this upcoming fall semester.I could just take a bunch of bullshit intro courses that I could ace with minimal work for the rest of the credits I need to graduate. If I double major, it'll be upper level English courses and German (I need some intermediate foreign language credits, and I'm not going back to Japanese).

What do you guys think?

I just looked over my transcript for school and the degree requirements, and I found that I miscalculated when exactly I'll be graduating. Instead of graduating next fall like I thought, I'll be finished next summer. I'm really happy about this and hope I'm not overlooking something...

My current goal [17 Jun 2008|03:01pm]

Panzer Dragoon Saga is a rare game. It's not exactly the rarest game ever, but it's definitely the rarest critically acclaimed game. It has a 93% on Gamerankings and only 30,000 copies were released in North America. The original code for the game was lost, so there's no chance of Sega rereleasing this game on something else. The end result of all of this is a game that is highly sought after and between $200-$300.

As soon as I come across that much money, it's mine and I'm keeping it until I die or desperately need money.

I hate everything about my Sociology class. I'm sitting in it now and there's a strong mix of dramatic college kids and I've-lived-longer-than-you-so-I-know-more parents that all think that because they can say "I don't think any MAN should be able to tell a WOMAN what to do with her body," or make some generic comment about how the white man is screwing us all over that they're participating in a meaningful conversation. This class is the epitome of what I hate about college.

If pretentiousness were butter, the left side of my body would be paralyzed by the several strokes I would have had within the first half hour of class.

I have to cut this entry short because I have to do an exercise in which I write down two stereotypes for each race. Damn it all.

According to a respectable Scandinavian video game magazine called Gamereactor, Shenmue and Shenmue II will be rereleased on the Wii with special Wiimote mini games. It was in the rumors section of the magazine, but rumors printed in game magazines have a really good chance of being true. The rumors printed in EGM (the only game magazine I ever read) are very rarely false. Since Gamereactor is one of the biggest game magazines in Scandinavia, I'm getting my hopes up along with everyone else in the Shenmue community.

The rumor is on a bunch of game websites now (mostly second rate ones, i.e. not Gamespot, IGN, or Gamespy). With E3 coming up...who knows? We may get an official announcement...

This rumor is the best thing to come from Scandinavia since they started giving us metal bands.

I'm about to go to Cumberland Mall to buy Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for PS2. There are a few reasons for this...

1. MvC2 is one of the best fighting games of all time. It's just fun and worth having for this reason alone.

2. If I don't get it now, one day it's gonna be super rare and cost $500. It's already rare now (hence the trip to Cumberland Mall) and up to $80.

3. Booher and Lena need to play it. As fans of Marvel and video games, you guys are incomplete...unless you have played it before. In that case, just ignore this reason.

I'm really looking forward to this. Everyone should come over and play it soon.

I finished the main GTA IV. It deserves every bit of praise it gets. The story is awesome. The physics make killing yourself and blowing up things/people more fun than in any other game I've played. Mission variety would have been great, but the shootouts and car chases never got old. There's really only two things that bothered me.

The first thing is the lack of stuff to do. San Andreas was overwhelming in almost every way. There was entirely too much stuff in that game, and that was a very good thing. But in GTA IV, there is hardly anything to do outside of the missions. I don't really blame Rockstar for this one, though. They did the right thing by focusing on revamping the core gameplay and atmosphere. It's only slightly disappointing that they raised the bar so high for San Andreas and then had to lower it for IV. I haven't played the multiplayer yet, though. Maybe that makes up for it.

My second problem is the targeting system. They finally fixed the targeting system that made all the other GTA games so frustrating to play. The problem is that they fixed it too much. I get a headshot every single time I shoot someone. I don't want to be able to do that. Rockstar needs to just put away their pride and take the aiming system from Saints Row. They should scrap the whole targeting thing. A free-aiming cover system would be absolutely perfect.

I rented a fun puzzle game for the Wii called Boom Blox. Did anyone reading this ever play The Incredible Machine other than David? Well, if you did, then combine that game with Jenga and you get Boom Blox. Check it out if you have a Wii or will have one soon.

David: What's that song with all the metal voices? I need to hear it.

I rented Super Mario Galaxy Sunday night. Last night, I finished the entire game. All 120 stars.

The game is fun. Really, really fun. I just wish it were a little more challenging. I feel that way about a lot of newer games. Either I've gotten really good or the games have gotten really easy. Or a combination of the two.

I'm getting tired of blowing through games with little or no difficulty. I think I'm gonna start playing on hard modes whenever they're available. As long as the game retains a solid level of playability and isn't annoying like Trauma Center or near-impossible like most Contra games, I think hard modes would be pretty suitable for me.

All that aside, Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes out in just a couple of days. Hopefully I'll be getting it. With money. Money that's owed to me. Come on Amber. Come on government. You both owe me money. Get to it.

My dad is against gay marriage because it's gross and unnatural. I've heard that plenty of times as dumb as it is, but he also said he'd be ok with it if one of them got a sex change. Does anyone else think that's odd? I find it troubling.

Also, check out this picture of Bill and Hillary Clinton from when they were hippies.

Assassin's Creed is the second most overrated game of 2007 next to Crackdown. I really don't understand all the 9s and 8s it gets. The game is a 7 at best if you give it bonus points for having an awesome story.

Condemned and King Kong were both great. Condemned a little more so.

Perfect Dark Zero is the biggest disappointment of all time. Whoever designed the shitty levels and kooky "girl-power" feel of the game should be tortured. Rare hasn't done anything right since they jumped ship to Microsoft.

I swear to god if Sega doesn't jump on the absolutely perfect idea to create a Shenmue compilation for Wii...

Mugen game is cancelled.  I realized that it takes up a gig of RAM when I play it. Few people that would have gotten the game would have been able to play it.

I'm selling my computer and everything that goes with it soon.  I'm getting a laptop sometime in the near future and I don't really see any reason why I should keep this. I don't have a clue what it's all worth. Here's a list of specs and shit. Maybe one of you more computer savvy people can tell me about how much I can get out of it.

Pentium 4 3.4GHz processor (I think I have two of these or something...)
2GB of RAM
Two 186 GB Hard drives
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card
ATI Radeon 9550 video card
19" LCD Monitor

Yeah, that's all I know to throw out there.  I'm probably moving at the end of the year/beginning of next year.  It really isn't a huge deal, though.  If everything goes as planned, I'll see everyone just as much as I do now (hardly at all).  Lawrenceville isn't as far as you think.  Or maybe I'm just used to the drive.  My parents are probably moving, too. Sometime in April, I think.  Good times in this house. Good times.

I'm seriously considering becoming a high school teacher. At least temporarily.  I might get some grad school in while I'm a high school teacher and move up to being a professor if I make it all the way.

Yes, I know how much they make a year.

Ok, let's try this... [24 Nov 2007|11:10pm]
I'm at a loss for what else to put in my game as far as music goes. I have 14 songs that will probably go in and I need about 40-50 more.

So here's what I'm suggesting. Give me a list of songs you'd like to play a fighting game to, and they WILL be in the game in some form or another as long as it's good fightin' music. Don't throw in some neopussy experimental ambient art rock just because you like the song. Metal works best. Some fast paced electronica (not dance...that only works in the Mortal Kombat movie) works well, too. If you're not sure, watch a 2D fighter set to the song. Also, for boss battles, songs that give you a sense of epic scale and/or impending doom would be nice.

Mugen... [21 Nov 2007|03:37am]
I've finished putting in stages (50 total).  The next step is music.  Does anyone know of any good mp3 editors so I can get rid of those pesky vocalists?

Suggestions for music are also welcome.
